STI Receives Largest Capacity Ship to Call at Chilean ports
Coming from Callao in Peru, the vessel will then continue its route to Coronel.
San Antonio, San Antonio Terminal Internacional (STI) continues to set records, this time with the arrival of the MSC Chiyo, the ship with the largest cargo capacity to be served in the country, with 16,616 TEU.
STI's general manager, Rodrigo Galleguillos, highlighted the arrival of this vessel and the work of the entire team to service it. "Our terminal boasts a wharf and draft capacity capable of receiving large vessels like this one. We have prepared ourselves with technology and equipment that allow our employees to serve these ships with the safety and efficiency we are known for," he said.
He added that the investments made and the maneuvering studies carried at STI position it as one of the most efficient ports in Latin America. "Ships like MSC Chiyo have more capacity than many 400-meter vessels, so we are very happy to celebrate a new milestone for our terminal," he said.
At the beginning of the year, STI--Chile's leading terminal--received two new ship-to-shore (STS) cranes and two rubber tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, making it the only port in Chile capable of receiving two super post-Panamax vessels simultaneously.
While vessels of this size have already been received, the MSC Chiyo has a larger beam and height, as well as a special TEU distribution, which allows for greater capacity.
Vessel Information
With a length of 366 meters and a beam of 51 meters, the container ship is capable of handling 16,616 TEUs. It imports retail and construction products and exports copper and lumber.
In addition, it is equipped with generators that allow it to reduce greenhouse gas and fuel emissions. The container ship also features efficient rudder propellers and fuel-efficient devices that improve the vessel's maneuverability.
